April 2024

A second instalment of the BOM project with two tulip blocks, one pieced and one appliqué, and a pieced paeony block. Click here for instructions.

The applique tulip was the most popular pattern to start with.

Two participants decided to try the pieced tulip and paeony.

Hopefully there will be some finished blocks at next months show and tell.

HM had this lovely paeony quilt for show and tell this month. All hand sewn, it was started a long time ago and put to one side until H decided to get it finished.

Another quilt for Project Linus, this one using 12 inch blocks made from scraps by CD.

March 2024

This month we start a series of BOM projects on the theme of nature. We will be presenting a couple of designs each month for the next six meetings, using various techniques. The finished size of the blocks is 12 inches. Our first two blocks are tree and leaf patterns. The technique used is American piecing, where you draw around a template on your fabric and cut out with a quarter inch seam allowance all round. You then pin and stitch the pieces together along the drawn lines. Our demonstrator HM uses this technique for all her pieced quilts, her demo was enthusiastically received with everyone having a go. There were also instructions for rotary cutting the pieces for hand or machine sewing. MW also tried the maple leaf block at 6 inches, as four of these stitched together would make a 12 inch block. All but one participant started with the maple leaf block, it was the simplest of the two.

February 2024 - Our first meeting this year

We had a demo on piecing over papers this month. We have covered this before but only using hexagons, so this time we tried out a variety of other shapes as well as hexagons.

Church windows, Ohio star and two designs using hexagons, diamonds, triangles and cones

The Ohio star was the most popular but all shapes were chosen by participants.

Church windows, hexagons (WIP), 3 of Ohio star and an 8 pointed star

We also had some show and tell to look at.

A lovely building/baby blocks quilt brought in by a visitor.

This quilt has been 50 years in the making, but looks very fresh as ditsy prints seem in vogue currently and the plain and mottled fabric never goes out of fashion as they are such good blenders. The photo does not do the colours justice, they were more vibrant.

Hexagon quilt HM, made as a gift

These charming hexagons are nicely set off by the red central squares. The top will be appliquéd to a border ready for layering and quilting. This has been handsewn and will be hand quilted. A labour of love.

This pattern was picked up at a stash sale and is now finished MW

Another quilt pieced over papers, slightly adapted from the original pattern to give a more homogenous look to the squares between the octagons. I do like blues and turquoise with the yellow/green and white I think it looks fresh and zingy.

Two quilts for Project Linus CD

These two Linus quilts were made from scraps and yardage from the stash. The stash does not seem to be getting any smaller, but it is being used. Loads more from where it came from too!
