 This month we were having fun with Foundation paper piecing. There were several patterns on offer in different sizes. There were no written instructions, but this link is for a nice You Tube tutorial on the process, How to paper piece with Carol Doak., and this link is for a PDF file on the process by Carol PDF file. A very nice lady called Sara P contacted us to ask if we would be interested in taking on some of her mothers fabric stash and equipment, as she was no longer able to quilt. As quilters we all like a rummage, so Sara brought along some fabric and haberdashery for which we are very grateful. I hope to see some projects from the fabrics at future meetings. Thank you to Sara and her mum.

This month our BOM theme was bugs. We had three applique patterns to work from, ladybird, bee and dragonflies. These could be hand or machined sewn. The examples were all machine sewn. Instructions.

Work went underway choosing fabric and cutting out shapes. There more members working on them than pictures taken.

We also had some finished blocks from previous meetings, showing some lovely quilts in the making.

As you may have noticed some of the blocks have been added by participants because they liked them and it fitted the theme.

Lastly here are two quilts made or finished by MW for Linus. These shirting fabric squares and purple blocks were from other quilters who, for whatever reason, never got round to finishing them.

March 2024

 This month we start a series of BOM projects on the theme of nature. We will be presenting a couple of designs each month for the next six meetings, using various techniques. The finished size of the blocks is 12 inches. Our first two blocks are tree and leaf patterns. The technique used is American piecing, where you draw around a template on your fabric and cut out with a quarter inch seam allowance all round. You then pin and stitch the pieces together along the drawn lines. Our demonstrator HM uses this technique for all her pieced quilts, her demo was enthusiastically received with everyone having a go. There were also instructions for rotary cutting the pieces for hand or machine sewing. MW also tried the maple leaf block at 6 inches, as four of these stitched together would make a 12 inch block. All but one participant started with the maple leaf block, it was the simplest of the two.

May 2022 - Wholecloth quilting

This month we had a short chat, with some small examples, about Wholecloth quilting, history and technique. There were some small patterns available if you wanted to give it a go.

We also had the group quilt from earlier this year. We decided we would layer it  and quilt it without borders, and finish it with a multi fabric strip binding. Thanks to MW for it's assembly.

HM has made this paper pieced New York Beauty quilt. H says that after making such a lot of paper pieced blocks the novelty wore off and she may never make another. It is a Beauty and worth the effort.

March 2022 - Folded boxes

 We had a good time making these little folded boxes this month. Most of them were completed on the evening the rest only needing a few more minutes to complete. We had 3 new enthusiastic participants all with a little box to take home. Click here for pattern.

Some members had projects on the go that they wanted to work on. This one a quilt continued from last month.

Finally 2 finished projects. The first one was a panel started by a friend, completed by another friend as a present to a third friend as a special gift for a significant birthday. The hanging has a dedication on the back detailing all this.

A perennial favourite with all ages is Thomas the Tank Engine. This one is destined for a grandson.

November saw a diminished number of members attending, only 6, but those who did were enthusiastic when it came to making a decoration or two.

December 2020 - Cute Robin Christmas card

Christmas is fast approaching, hopefully it looks like we will be able to spend it with some of our family. This month our project is this Cute Robin Christmas card.

Simple and quick to make so why not make some up for family and friends.

This lovely quilt has been made by Celia H for her grandson, who is mad on tigers.

November update

Once again we find ourselves in Lockdown, although disappointing, if it means we can have small get togethers at Christmas it will be worth it.

Last month we sent out brightly coloured squares of fabric to members, asking them to add borders in bright colours to coordinate and/or contrast. Here is one result;

We will collect the blocks once we are able to meet up again, hopefully early in 2021, and make them up into Project Linus quilts.

November sees us making some Christmas decorations from this selection;
